Our Community

Lowville, New York, serenely settled along the banks of the Mill Creek River, is home to nearly 3,500 citizens, (Census 2000 data). Lowville serves as the seat of Lewis County, NY. The village was named for Nicholas Low, an early landowner.

Lowville nestles between the foothills of the majestic Adirondack Mountains, the Black River Valley and Tug Hill Plateau. This natural paradise affords outdoor enthusiast's a wide range of recreational activities which include fishing, skiing, mountain climbing, ice skating, golfing, hiking, hot air ballooning, white water rafting, boating, camping, hunting, biking, and snowmobiling. Each July, the Lewis County Fair provides the community with an exciting array of rides, concerts and spectacular fireworks. Visitors can experience Lowville's hospitality while staying at area B&B's such as The Butterscotch House.

Lowville is home to a Blue Ribbon Rated School, renowned for its excellence. Lowville Academy and Central School is a charming kindergarten through twelfth grade facility that serves approximately 1,400 students. Lewis County and the surrounding area offer a myriad of excellent opportunities for higher education. These include Potsdam College, Clarkson University in Potsdam, SUNY Canton College of Technology, St. Lawrence University in Canton, Syracuse University, SUNY Oswego, SUNY Institute of Technology Utica/Rome and Utica College.

Dairy is Lowville's primary industry. As home to one of the largest milk sheds in the northeast, Lowville produces the majority of milk in New York, and is responsible for processing 65% of Lewis County's milk production. Kraft Foods, the biggest private employer in Lowville, operates a manufacturing facility that specializes in cream cheese.

Lowville's location halfway between the New York State Thruway and the St. Lawrence River provides potential businesses an area that is ripe for development. In addition, Lowville has access to seven of the top ten U.S. markets, via the Thruway and Interstate 81. Over 70% of Canada's retail purchasing power is located in the Montreal-Ottawa-Toronto area, which is easily accessible through the St. Lawrence River.

With its central location, low crime rate and low cost of living, Lowville, New York is the ideal setting to relocate a family or business.
