Lewis
County, New
York lies tucked away in a quiet corner of the
beautiful Adirondack
Region. The county is named after Morgan
Lewis, who was the New York Governor at the time
the area was established. The Village of Lowville
serves as the seat of Lewis County. As of the 2000
Census, Lowville's population was 3,476,
with 26,944
residents in the entire county.
The
majestic Adirondack
Mountains border Lewis County in the east, with
the Tug
Hill Plateau bordering the west. Serene woodlands,
prosperous dairy farms and over two thousand miles of
crystal clear streams and lakes make up the region's
rugged landscape. This spacious paradise offers a

Lewis
County's strategic location makes it a superb

the heart of the North Country, halfway between the New
York State Thruway and the St.
Lawrence River. The Thruway and Interstate
81 provide easy access to seven of the top ten
U.S. markets. The Montreal-Ottawa-Toronto
area, which is home to more than seventy percent of
Canada's retail purchasing power, is accessible
through the St. Lawrence River, located just an hour
to the north. In addition to the county's prime
location, the Lewis
County Industrial Development Agency offers
support and financial incentives to ensure the success
of new businesses and local firms looking to expand.
Early
settlers primarily produced crops such as wheat, hops,
flax and essential oils. However, the current economy
relies heavily on the dairy
industry. Lowville
is home to one of the largest milk sheds in the
northeast. It is responsible for the biggest milk
production concentration in New York and processes 65%
of the milk produced in the county. Kraft
Inc., the largest cream cheese plant in the world,
is one of the major employers in the county. The area
is also noted for producing fine maple
syrup.
The Lewis
County area has an impressive variety of top-notch

student population. The county is home to five school
districts and three private parochial schools. The
region also offers numerous outstanding institutes for
